Avonsrus is an architect-renovated farmstead (dating back to 1954), boasting incredible attention to detail, regarding both its design and beautiful interior decorating. These efforts culminated in re-creating an exclusive homey, farm ambiance. Avonsrus truly offers tranquility, peace and quiet away from the buzz of city life. Into the bargain, the (on site) hosts’ focus on hospitality will also insure an enjoyable, comfortable and safe stay. The secluded cottage is spacious, luxurious and exclusive (only one unit available – no other guests in the vicinity) The quaint kitchen is stylishly and very adequately equipped for self-catering (yet fabulous home-cooked South African cuisine is available on request)

History of Avonsrus
Avonsrus is not just another guesthouse as you might have figured. This beautiful cottage was once an old farm house in the early 1950’s. It operated without running water or electricity. The builders and owners of the house were Annie and Gert Visser, parents of Susan Conradie (formerly Visser) who at that time was a toddler and today is our beloved mother/ mother-in-law and adored grandmother! Inside the house you will find pictures of her on her fourth birthday, as well as her and her sister swinging in the backyard under the thorn tree.
Traces of this period can still be seen in
the pictures of the old Chev, the engraved word
(“TOOLS”) on the front door if you look closely
and also in the headboards of the second room which used to be the old back door. Thanks
to the visionary eye of our brother, the architect,
the dream of Avonsrus was born.
As Oupa Gert called his home Avonsrus (a
place of rest at night), the name had to stay
and also as much as possible of the original
building, to keep it as authentic as possible.
On the 10th of November 2016, Avonsrus was therefore
re-born with most of the restoration work done.
The main structure of the house remained
and only two walls were re-built due to
structural decay. Most of the windows,
doors and all of the roof were preserved
and given a second life after more than
60 years of exposure to all the elements of nature.
